Chapter Five

Of all the coffee shops in all the towns in all the world, Charlotte walks into mine. It’s crazy how excited I am to see her outside of the office, and I’m glad I ignored my head and followed my heart when I asked her to join me for lunch. While she’s up at the counter, I have a few minutes to collect myself—but not many. Before I know it, she’s making her way back to the table. It’s impossible to keep my eyes off of her full, sexy hips swaying from side to side.

“I didn’t think bosses took breaks,” she says, slinking into the chair opposite me. Her tone throws me off, confident and forward. I fucking love it.

“Well, only when they can’t seem to keep their mind on their work in the office.” I don’t tell her that she’s the main reason I can’t get my head straight.

Charlotte’s dark lashes flutter against her full cheeks. “I can relate. Sometimes my best work is done laying down.” I nearly choke on my latte. “I cuddle up in bed with my laptop and go to town.”

Her innocent statement filled my mind with filthy, dirty thoughts. Picturing Charlotte on the bed, in any position, makes me so hard I have to shirt in my chair to avoid discomfort.

“Well, I suppose you’ll have to take a few work-from-home days, then?”

“I don’t know.” She takes a drink, leaving behind a little foam on her top lip, then licks it away while keeping her eyes locked on me. Goddamn. “I kind of like coming into the office.” Her cup clinks against the table. “It really is a great place to work.”

I feel like we’re having a conversation between the lines.

“I like it.” I smile, noticing how her blouse is unbuttoned enough to reveal a modest hint of her full cleavage. My eyes flicker back up to hers, but not in time. She catches me checking her out, but right now I don’t fucking care. I like what I see, and every bone in my body is begging me to go for it, to claim her as my own. Because she is. She always has been.

“If you didn’t like it you could always change it.” Charlotte interlaces her fingers on the table, showing off her bright red manicure. “Or sell your company.” She lets out a little laugh, but when I don’t join in, she realizes that she’s hit on something. “Wait, you’re not selling your company are you?”

“No,” I say a little too quickly. “But there is this agency chomping at the bit to buy me out. Sometimes I think it’d be a better deal for everyone. My company is my life, which leaves little room for anything else.” I meet her sultry gaze, wondering if she catches my drift—that any relationship I were to have would play second fiddle to my work. That’s how it’s always been. If she does read between the lines, she doesn’t let on.

“I’m not selling, though.” I run a hand through my hair.
