Chapter 10: The Stop
We sleep outside. The temperature doesnât dip below seventy, even in the desert. Itâs a balmy night to top off a balmy day. I donât sleep easily, unless Iâm drugged or blasted by the dead apparently, but I especially canât sleep in the heat. Nor can I sleep sitting up, and Henry still has me tied to this fucking rock.
All thatâs left to do is watch him. The lantern has long gone out, but my eyes have adjusted to the night. Henry is curled up under a hunter-green sleeping bag. The blanket he so graciously offered me â that I so rudely refused â is piled in a ball next to him.
I imagine a baseball-sized spider, its eight bulging eyes and spindly legs, crawling into that blanket only to attack Henryâs face in the morning. The spider is venomous, of course, and its poisoned bite begins rotting Henryâs face, bits of necrotic skin falling off in chunks as he collapses into a headless lump.
Itâll be a story Iâll think about later on. Itâs not every day you encounter a creature that could melt a face off so rapidly. Iâll Google the spider later. Itâll be called brown-desert-something-or-other. Iâll say, âOh, how interesting,â and check my email or a subreddit. And then I wonât think about it for a long while.
The fantasy brings a smile to my face. Iâve begun to hate Henry. Not only because heâs kidnapped me with murderous intent, though that would be enough for most. I hate him because he thinks heâs special. Some sort of chosen prophet. When in reality, heâs a pawn. A nothing little chess piece being moved around the board by a much more powerful hand.
For now, Iâll let him sleep. Whatever monster heâs in cahoots with shouldnât be my business, anyway. I should end this whole charade now, but I want to see the smug looks get blown off his face when he realizes whatâs happening.
Whether itâs by the bite from a spider or something else.
