Blake’s head throbbed. In his mind, thoughts of Eva and Lily battled for dominance. He didn’t know why he couldn’t stop thinking about Eva. He felt something he hadn’t known since he arrived: hope. Eva was real. She was good. Somehow, she wasn’t in Lily’s thrall. She had her own thoughts and emotions. Through her secret independence, he found a lifeline to his old self.

He took a huge risk at the ceremony by pretending to have sex with her, when in reality, he dry-humped her leg instead. Thankfully, Lily didn’t ask him to undress like the others. The bulky robe hid the truth from her and saved Eva and him from a rape neither of them wanted.

It might not be possible next time. Eva had to understand the stakes, so she obeyed Lily. He needed her to stay and to stay alive, but if Lily knew how much he wanted her, Eva wouldn’t last long.

“Blake,” Lily called from the kitchen. “We’ve misplaced my assistant. Could you go find her?”

“Yes, Mistress,” he said. “Right away.”

Outside alone again. He thanked whatever powers brought Eva to him and prayed they kept her safe. He walked outside, paused for a moment, surveying the property, searching for Eva’s dark head. He saw her as she approached the corn field.

“Shit.” Blake jogged toward her. He wanted to sprint, but his body was too weak. Just the slow jog took everything he had. “Eva!” he called.

She stopped. “I can’t even go for a walk?”

“Sure,” he said as he reached her. “But not alone.”

“I saw a building out there from my window. I wanted to check it out. You never showed it to me.”

“You can’t go there without Lily’s permission.”

Eva scowled. “Why not?”

“It’s an old building. Nothing to see anyway.”

“I don’t believe you.”

He chewed his lip. “I’m looking out for you.”

“Sure,” she said, scratching at her neck. He noticed a bruise. Probably from the baptism. The disciples got carried away sometimes. “Like you looked out for me last night?”

Guilt pinched his stomach. “I don’t know what you mean.”

She stared. “Whatever. I know it wasn’t a dream this time. Where I come from, they call your little show murder and rape.”

The denial sprang to his lips. He opened his mouth, but the words wouldn’t come.

“Forget it,” Eva said. “I know she’s got you brainwashed. I’m not mad at you. Well I am, but it’s not just you. This whole setup is terrible. You know that, right?”

He did know, but what was he going to say? That he no longer controlled his own thoughts? Or even if he could say no, he’d be dead the second the word left his lips? Did he tell her she’d be dead too if she didn’t start conforming to the rules? No, he couldn’t say anything. Instead, he changed the subject.

“Lily wants you at the main house,” he said. “So…”

“Fine.” Eva walked past him.

“Hey,” he said, following her. “Promise you won’t go near the nursery unless Lily takes you.”

“Sure.”

“I mean it, Eva.”

“I said sure.”

“Say the words.
