MARISSA

I caught up with Rhain a little while later, keen to share my news with him as well. Maybe he could also clear up some of my confusion about Raesus and his desire to keep knowledge of me to himself.

Rhain was sitting in the sun outside the government dome, chatting to a younger version of himself. As I approached, the older white Danan smiled and gestured me over.

“This is my son, Rian. He and his brothers are undergoing their trials. It’s a very exciting time.”

I nodded at the youth. “Hi, I’m Marissa. You’ll be getting those scary brands on your face, huh? That will make you a bad ass, big time.”

Rian looked at his father in confusion. Rhain laughed.

“That got lost in translation. Even with a mother like his, there are still moments when they misunderstand Gaian colloquialisms.”

I giggled. “Okay, sorry. I said that those mark will make you look tough. Someone others won’t want to mess with.”

Rian nodded his understanding. “Tough, yes. But worthy to be called a Danan warrior. That’s what’s important. I hope to keep perfectly still so my brands are as clear as my father’s.”

Rhain nodded his approval. I didn’t understand this male need to endure pain to prove something. It was like that at home, too, so I couldn’t say it was a Danan trait. But it was still baffling. Life was painful enough without adding to it, wasn’t it?

Rian rose and nodded at me and his father before striding off, confident and manly for all he was still six years old. A human boy would barely be starting school. But as Danans gestated and grew to maturity three times faster than a human, it was what it was. Maybe it had developed that way back on their dangerous home planet so that more of them survived.

“You look happy. How did Jenna handle her session?” Rhain asked.

I sat down at his side and watched Rhain’s son disappear around the corner. “Great. I think he really helped her with the death of her dad. The big test will come when and if she lets him work on her abduction. It’s excruciating talking about what happened. The details of it, the way your emotions and thoughts all come up to the surface again, as if it just happened. But they don’t stay long, because Kius clears them quickly. It’s magical what he can do.”

“I’m glad. You women don’t deserve to carry the burden of what those bastards did to you. It’s enough that it happened, having it dog your paths forever is just too much.”

“None of this is your fault. Or the fault of any of the Danan warriors. Those renegades were raised in a completely different way to you. To me it’s a sign that nurture is even more significant than nature.”

Rhain nodded, his expression dark. “I have killed. Back before we found Bronwyn, my brothers and I were in the forces. It was never my personal choice. But as I could see where the future might take us, I was content to wait it out.
