Chapter 7

Alex: I miss you.

Gannon: Don’t say that.

Alex: I’m sorry.

Gannon: Don’t be sorry either. That makes it worse.

Alex: Sorry

Gannon: Grrrr!

*

Gannon: I miss you.

Alex: You told me not to say it.

Gannon: That’s you. I’m allowed, since I’m the one who got dumped. You’re the dumper, so you have to listen to it.

Alex: Okay.

Gannon: Well?

Alex: Well what?

Gannon: Do you miss me?

Alex: Am I allowed to say it?

Gannon: I asked.

Alex: Okay. I went to bed thinking about you last night and couldn’t go to sleep. When I finally did, I dreamed about you, and woke up with a sharp pain in my chest. At first, I thought I might be having a heart attack. Then I realized, it was just breaking.

Gannon: You’re not allowed to say all that.

Alex: Sorry.

*

Alex: I miss you.

Gannon: You said it first again.

Alex: Am I not allowed to do that again?

Gannon: **sigh** We’re not very good at this.

Alex: At what?

Gannon: Breaking up.

Alex: I know.

Gannon: Kieran and Henley are staying with me this weekend. I just took Henley out on the boat. He says I should take you sometime. For a few minutes, I stuttered some shit. No idea what I said. I couldn’t find the words to say I’d already taken you and it would never happen again. How did this happen? How did I go from always being happily alone to going crazy without you? Please don’t answer that.

Alex: It’s my fault. I’m weak and insecure. We live far apart and you’re so high above me. You have some dude texting and calling, refusing to let go. Do you need a boyfriend who does the same thing? Always asking where you’re at? Accusation lacing every question?

Gannon: So funny story—Henley thinks you’re so quiet I wouldn’t know you were around. I guess he’s never seen you knock everything down you walk past and the crazy way you stamp up every stair.

Alex: Nobody sees me but you.

Gannon: That hurt.

Alex: Sorry.

Gannon: You’re not allowed to be sorry. You dumped me.

Alex: But I am. I’m sorry I let you drive me home that first night. Sorry about lunch the next day. I’m sorry for every late night text. Most of all, I’m just sorry.
