Chapter Twenty-Eight

From behind the wheel of her navy blue Opel Rekord, Franziska watched with rising anger as David and Anneliese got into a taxi.

Her head pounded from the venom that had pooled during a dull surveillance; confined too long, she ached in places where she needed to be supple and loose. She was Olympian in her concern for her body, fearful of the consequences of stunted reflex, and the emotion she felt upon seeing Anneliese touch David in a pleased decisive manner was too dangerous, she knew she could not afford it until other matters had been settled.

When the taxi pulled away, going west toward the Untermain bridge, Franzika put her own car into gear and made a risky U-turn, unyielding in the face of oncoming traffic, challenging and bluffing the driver of a bigger Monza, who very nearly took to the sidewalk in terror; with a grim single-handed twist of the wheel she drove fast in the other direction, blood on her lower lip where she had savaged it with her teeth. She was avid to claim a life; for now, any life would do.
