There are fifteen acts including ours, all to be performed on a large stage set up on the roof of the centre. First is a theatrical performance, which is followed by a boy rapping. All too quickly, our names are called and I realize that my hands are trembling. I look at Shatha and can see that she too is nervous. Her left eye is twitching. Recognizing her tension somehow helps to alleviate mine, and as soon as we walk onto the stage I forget about my sweaty brow and clammy hands.

Shatha sits down on a chair and starts to play a gentle melody to an immediately captivated audience. I stand by the microphone. The second I start singing, the audience – made up of the other performers, their families and friends, and workers from the centre – begin to roar with excitement. I see the proud faces of my parents beaming in the third row, right in the middle. A burst of love and warmth emanates from the crowd, with the sound of their applause rising so high it threatens to drown us out. Glancing over at Shatha, I can see that she too has picked up on the amazing vibe.
