Teachings to Remember When Encountering Frogs
Frogs and toads live their lives in between two elements. Born in the water, they swim, hunt, and grow up breathing through gills, and once they mature into full-grown adults, they emerge into the air and live on land, traveling back and forth between the elements of water and earth for the rest of their lives. All frog skin can get dried out, though toads tend to be able to regulate their hydration a little better. But most of these animals need ready access to water or a humid environment.
In fairy tales, frogs often symbolize ugliness, but with a hidden nobility, talent, or dignity lying just beneath. Those same fairy tales then reveal a kind of transformation, something that we can also see when we consider the frog's transition from tadpole to frog. If we consider this from the perspective of the elements, we might reflect on what it means to transform ourselves from a state in which we drift in a sea of our emotions, letting them control our destiny, until we grow the skills we need to stand on firmer ground. A healthy emotional life requires the stability of earth, with grounding in our physical body so that we know we can be secure in our present reality no matter what we're feeling moment to moment.
For the ancient Egyptians, frogs also represented abundant life, since frogs would return to Egypt every year when the Nile flooded the area with the fertile silt needed to grow food. Even today, the sound of chirping frogs in spring or summer brings to mind the abundance and ease of the season. Water is life, and everything living on earth depends on it. The health of frog populations gives us an immediate indication of the health of the water nearby. In this way, frog medicine reminds us of the fragility and importance of our water systems and brings us the sacred knowledge that physically and spiritually, we all depend on the health of our home, the earth.
