Trance Journey and Spirit Flight

SHAMANISM IS DEFINED BY THE ability of the shaman to enter a trance state and travel in a body different from the physical one we see with our eyes. The purpose of this shaman flight is healing, although the individual methods vary from culture to culture. Often the trance journey is enacted because the soul of the sick person has strayed from its home—the body—and the shaman has to go and retrieve the wandering or lost soul. Sometimes the journey is for the explicit purpose of communing with powerful beings who live in a different reality from the physical, in order to get their help in a healing process or conquer them in a shamanic battle on the invisible planes. The shaman, or the shamanic patient, can use the trance state to obtain information and advice from teachers and guides who are available on other levels. Telepathy happens in trance states, allowing for long-distance communication to take place between people, and knowledge of the future (divination) can often be gained while in trance. Esoteric science says that physical healing of the body can best be done by focusing on the physical body from another plane of consciousness, through the trance state.1 Methods of entering and achieving trance states vary from culture to culture and include a spectrum of diverse practices from quiet meditation to wild drumming and dancing, from fasting and purification to the ingestion of psychotropic substances (see fig. 39).
