Alden Wallace woke with a sigh and rolled over to face the bedside table. Even before his eyes fell on the blurry numbers of the digital clock, he knew it would be somewhere between two o’clock and two-thirty in the morning. When his eyes settled in and adjusted, he read the numbers: 2:21.

Told ya, his bladder seemed to say.

This had been going on for the last five years or so. Without fail, every single morning, he’d have to wake up to take a piss. As far as he knew, it was just one of the few minor signs that he was officially old. That was fine with him.

As a man in moderately good health—some high blood pressure and his doctor mentioned he needed to exercise more—he was fine if an early morning leak was the worst of his problems. People much younger had been taken for things much worse.

He crept out of his bedroom and down the short hall to the bathroom. He did his best not to think as he took a leak because he knew if he got his mind going, he’d never get back to sleep. He had planned to take her to Spain because she’d always wanted to go to Barcelona. He’d fully intended to do it too. But of course, life had other ideas.

Tonight, unsurprisingly, his thoughts turned to the Cassie Leigh case. Being half-asleep and stumbling back to bed, it was easier to admit this case had rocked him more than the handful of other serious crimes he’d been involved with since taking the role of sheriff. He wasn’t sure if it was because she was so young or because he was admittedly a bit understaffed at the station at the moment. Whatever the reason, it had rattled him—and he was damned glad Rebecca West had come along when she had.

He was glad to have her help, and he could already get a pretty good read on the sort of law enforcement official she was. She was determined, almost to the point of being stubborn. But what surprised him and made him enjoy working with her was the fact she did not take herself too seriously. She asked questions when she didn’t know the answer rather than wasting time to find it on her own. She was also not robotic and monotone in her conversation. And most importantly, she
