Chapter 19

~Violet’s Playlist: Howl, Florence + The Machine~

The tunnel was very similar to the one we had driven through when leaving Elijah's house to meet Adriel. Without the aid of car headlights, hollow empty blackness surrounded us on all sides. The light from the torch Elijah carried illuminated the path just a couple feet in front of us before being consumed by the dark. To say it was unsettling would be an understatement.

I was being hunted and I knew it.

Although Elijah wanted to keep any pertinent information from me initially, I had come to learn quite a few details. I knew that Radiants were immortals who had an inner light, and they drew strength and power from the sun. They were governed by the Council of Elders and various angels were somehow involved with carrying out council orders. The Radiants had been warring with the Shadows for an untold amount of time.

I didn't know much about the Shadows, but apparently the most powerful among them was the Shadow Prince who was also known as the Dark One, the Prince of Darkness, or as Daphne had referred to him, the Throne of Evil. I had heard Shadows referred to as nightwalkers as well.

However, beyond knowing of their existence and their alleged prince. I didn't know much about them other than the fact that they couldn't (or weren't supposed to be able to) pass through the veils of light.

Killian said that I had intentionally gone to try and assassinate the Dark Prince. But where I went, how I got there, what my plan had been, and what had happened were all mysteries. Yet, I did know that somehow my own inner light had been drained which resulted in an infection of darkness, called the Shadow's Kiss. And connecting to Elijah had been the only way to keep the darkness at bay and recharge my own luminescence.

According to Adriel, my family was aware of my situation. But as much as I wanted to trust her, I just didn't know if I could. I mean really. Where were they?

However, none of those things drove me as crazy as the ring on my finger. So many different scenarios had passed through my mind concerning the ring (from the mundane to the outrageous), that I was just at a loss. There was simply no thread to follow.

The one thing I did know for certain was that I did not want to take it off. It was the only thing that was my own. Everything else that I wore or carried, where I slept at night, what I ate, those were all things provided by others. None of it was mine. The ring was my sole possession.

And all of that put me here. In a dark tunnel, dependent upon Elijah while being hunted by some evil and apparently powerful being.

After traveling along in silence for some time, Elijah interrupted my mental breakdown of the situation. "I'm going to warn you now. We will have to pass through a Veil.
