Aya woke slowly to the soft beeping of the device Motlin had given her. Ever since she had been moved to Baraz's personal chamber, he had been free with his gifts. Both he and Farran had provided her with interesting devices and more information than they had been able to give before she became the Sacred Vessel.
She blushed at the title and stretched out on the sleeping bench. The bench and sleeping clothing was a gift from Baraz. Her new title was known only to Baraz and his people. He had not shared the information with the priests, yet. She could not honestly say she was upset that it was still a secret. Everything would change once it became common knowledge.
Though it seemed like some things had already changed. Aya sat up and swung her legs over the side of the bench. She leaned forward to prop her elbows on her knees and let her gaze wander across the room to the bench Baraz favored. Just the thought of him sent a pleasant shiver down her spine. Aya inhaled sharply and stood.
She should not think of him that way. Her eyes should not stray to him when he was not looking and she should not wonder how it would feel to hold his hand. He was being kind to her, giving her a respected title even, so she would be safe. He wanted her to be safe. It did not mean he cared for her as more than a responsibility.
Aya hurried through her morning washing and dressed in her sparring clothes. She would have a lesson with Farran later in the day. When her hair was braided over her shoulder, Aya stepped out into the outer chamber. Baraz was sitting at the long table. He looked up from the datapad in his hands when she stepped into the room.
She met his gaze and stood up straighter. His eyes flicked over her quickly, before he looked back down at the datapad. Aya raised her chin to hide the sinking defeat she felt in her stomach.
âI have a lesson with Motlin,â she said.
Baraz nodded without looking at her.
Aya turned and walked to the door. She thought she felt his gaze on her back, but when she glanced over her shoulder he was busy with the datapad. Aya pulled the door closed behind her.
Motlin waited just outside the door. He frowned when he saw her expression, but did not ask.
When they reached his chamber, Farran was waiting for them. He gave her a bright smile. âPleasant waking?â
âWell enough.â She looked from him to Motlin. âNo lesson today?â
âSomething of great importance. Did my father not tell you?â
Aya frowned and shook her head.
âIt was his idea,â Farran said. âMotlin and I have been working on it for weeks.â
Interest peaked, Aya stepped further into the room. âWhat is it?â
Motlin smirked at Farran and gestured for her to follow him to the inner chamber. âCome.â
Just inside the smaller room, where they often had lessons, a long table had been set up.
