THE JADE Goddess was only six inches in height but it was lovely nonetheless. Khan held it with both hands, cradling it gently. âDo you realize how close we really are?â he asked.
The woman sitting beside him in the Oriental-styled room was his elder, though no one would have ever guessed that. Her true name was unknown to even her closest associates, for everyone simply knew her as The Lotus. She had been part of Yih King since the beginning, when the groupâs legendary founder had decided to embrace the darker side of lifeâs existence. Even after the founder had passed on, The Lotus had remained with Yih King, often in the role of the founderâs living mouthpiece, quoting his words like scripture.
âDo not get overconfident,â she cautioned. She smoothed down the black skirt that was short enough to show off her toned legs, noting that Khanâs eyes flicked over them before he responded.
âThe Red Sash is here, just like we wanted⦠and he is old and sick. The Jade Goddess is ours. The walls have been weakened sufficiently. How can you call it overconfidence when our victory is so close that I can almost taste it?â
âThe Sash has snatched victory from our grasp before,â she reminded him. âAnd I am more concerned about Shadowman.â
âPfeh,â Khan spat out. âHe is nothing. Besides, he is more concerned with the actions of Master Darque than he is with ours. We have been in his city for weeks and he is completely unawares.â
âHe knows of us now.â
Khanâs face snapped up to hers. âHow do you know that?â
âBecause I did more than skim over the reports that have come in. Lester Gibson arrived and went straight to the home of Dox. Our sources have linked Dox to Shadowman.â
Khan stood up, setting The Jade Goddess down with great care. He said nothing for a moment and then asked, âWhat do you suggest?â
âDo not let your enemies come to you. It was foolish of you to draw The Red Sash here. You wanted him nearby so that he could witness your triumph. That act of pride could doom us all! You must strike first.â
Khan nodded, finally admitting to himself that he had misplayed his hand. Heâd hoped to turn Palmer Harrison against The Red Sash and then lure Gibson into a trap where Harrison would either kill him or capture him. Both men would then bear witness to the triumph of the Yih King, when Khan used the power locked within The Jade Goddess to fling open the doors between the world of the living and the world of the dead. The minions of the Deadside would emerge and it would be Khan who would control themâ¦
But in order to ensure that, he had to take action.
âI will take your advice, Lotus. The Red Sash⦠Dox⦠and The Shadowman will all die.â
