The other three people were there, drinking coffee and looking varying degrees of angry, worried and annoyed. As soon as Jeremy saw me, his annoyance surged to the forefront.

“Oh, no. No, no. What good is he going to be now?” He turned to his sister. “You should have left him alone, it’s not like he can help with anything.”

“He’s Rhys’ partner and he deserves to have a say in what’s going on here,” Jenny replied.

“No, we’re Rhys’ partners. He’s just the guy he’s taken to fucking recently.”

“Shut up, what would you know about it?”

“Enough to know that—” The argument went on, and I was a little surprised Zahra didn’t put a stop to it. She didn’t seem like the type to tolerate people wasting time, but when I got a good look at her eyes, I realized why she was letting the siblings bicker over me. There was nothing in her face but flat, unequivocal dislike as she looked at me. If that dislike meant letting my already-bruised ego take a pounding, then apparently she was all for a little delay.

Christine, however, wasn’t. After maybe half a minute, she growled. I mean, really growled. I had no idea how human vocal cords could make that kind of sound, but hers did and it frightened the crap out of me. It also silenced Jeremy and Jenny, and seemed to knock Zahra out of her contemptuous fugue. Christine made room for me on the couch, and I sat down. The silence lengthened a bit, then I cleared my throat and asked, “What have you figured out?”

“Not much,” Zahra said tiredly. “We know who has him, we know why, but we don’t know where he’s being kept. All we can tell is that he’s not on the San Marco sestieri any longer, which still leaves a lot of Venice, and there’s no guarantee they haven’t made it to the mainland already.”

“Who has him?”

“He doesn’t need to know that!” Jeremy burst out. Zahra shushed him with a glance.

“Rhys hasn’t told you much about himself, has he,” she asked me coolly, not really a question at this point. “You know what he is, though.”

“He’s a doppelganger.”

“Yes. A humanoid shapeshifter. It’s an extremely rare ability, rare even within families that can produce doppelgangers. They’re incredibly useful once they harness their talent and every government, corporation and criminal in the world would give their left hand for the chance to work with one. Some governments don’t want to gamble on the genetic lottery producing a doppelganger with the inclination and morals to be their cat’s paw. Some governments make their own.”

Holy shit. “Like a selective breeding program?” That was highly illegal stuff, and a practice that had been banned since the Enlightenment.

“Quite like that, yes. Rhys is the product of Britain’s breeding program, one of the most successful among modern governments.” She laughed at my shocked look. “It’s akin to nuclear weapons, Daniel. Everyone wants them, no one wants the other people to have them, so they make it illegal and speak pretty words while inside, the core is rotten with lies.
