Chapter 17
Lyssa did not need to open her eyes to know that she was alone in the bed. Hunter probably had to get up early today. But still, it would have been nice to wake up next to him. She moved her hands to where he had slept and was not surprised when her hands touched the icy cold sheets. When she opened her eyes, she saw that the candles had long since simmered out. Hunter had been gone for quite some time. The lack of his face in the morning light made a pang of sadness enter her mind. Was he a morning person? Or was he a grump like her? These were the simple things that in a perfect world, they should be able to share.
Lyssa looked around the floor for her things and found them easily. Dressing quickly, Lyssa went to the mirror on the wall. Did she look changed? Should she? After a night filled with lovemaking like that, she expected to look as changed as she felt inside. If anything, Lyssa appeared different, a little more confident in her skin. Was this what a well-loved woman felt like? Lyssa decided not to let anything ruin this delicious feeling of contentment. She closed her eyes and pictured her room, and off she went.
At first, she didnât realize what was different, until she looked at her bed. A single red rose was lying on the pillow where she slept. Hunter. It was his way of apologizing for not being there in the morning. He must have known she would come here next. Lyssa picked up the rose from the pillow and put it to her nose. She lingered there as long as she could, taking in the peaceful scent of the flowerâs petals. Setting it down on the dresser, she took one last look in the mirror. Her aura was definitely glowing brighter. Sheâd have to tone it down if she didnât want to attract too much attention.
âWell, time for me to face the day.â Lyssa quickly showered and picked out fresh clothes for her morning, before leaving her room to have breakfast with Jackson. As she sat down at the table, she made sure to put her thoughts on lockdown. He did not need to read about what happened last night. That was private.
âGood morning,â she greeted him, and was surprised to find Serena seated next to him.
âHappy after birthday. How was your date?â
âThank you, Serena. It was one of the best.â Lyssa hoped that the smile she gave them did not betray her. She wished she could talk to Hunter today, but she knew he had gone back to his secret identity this morning, and there was no guarantee when she would see him again. Lyssa hoped she would be too busy this week to miss his absence.
âSo, whatâs the plan for today?â
âMore work at the Watch Tower. I have more cataloging to do.â Lyssa tried not to meet her eyes. Her answer wasnât far from the truth, but she held back the pertinent details.
