Chapter 27

Jim returned home, worried about Pam. He knew how much Marty meant to her. Part of him wished that he had insisted on staying with her, but he wondered if he was being selfish about that. It was a far greater joy to spend time with her rather than to return home, where his father was waiting for him. Tension ran through him whenever he thought about Jack, even on a night like this. Some might have thought he should be grateful that he had a father in the first place. Pam had lost her biological father and then the man she had as a father figure, but in his opinion, having no father was better than having a jerk for one. Soon enough, it would all be over though. Jim couldn’t wait for the moment when he left properly without ever having to see Jack again. It was going to be sweet. It was going to be amazing not having to worry about being yelled at or harangued for making his own decisions.

And the moment couldn’t come soon enough, but for now, he still had to return home.

Jack had thrown him out more times than Jim could remember, but he knew that Jack would never have seriously expected him to stay away. Jack liked the power too much. The best thing Jim could do to offend his father was leave entirely, but Jim didn’t have the means yet. That would all come soon though. He was saving diligently and he hoped it wouldn’t be long before he could give Pam the life that she deserved.

He opened the door slowly, careful not to make any noise.

“Where have you been?” Jack asked. He was sitting in darkness. Jim heard a slurp of beer and his heart sank.

“Pam had some bad news. Someone she knew died. I just went to offer her some support.”

“Well, look at you being the kind and thoughtful boyfriend. You know that being soft with your emotions doesn’t get you anywhere, right? Do you think the great men of history cared about how other people felt? When are you going to get it into your thick skull that to achieve anything in this life, you can’t afford to love other people.”

“It hasn’t got you very far, has it?” Jim spat. He was too tired and too angry to let his father get away with saying anything he wanted. Jim was at the end of his tether, and he was emboldened by Pam’s love for him. He had won her heart, and because of that, he knew that anything was possible.

“What do you mean by that?” Jack snarled.

Jim flicked on the light and suddenly the shadows were dispelled, revealing his father. Jack was sitting slouched on his stained armchair. He wore a vest and boxers. He was still in good shape for his age, but the beer had taken its toll on his gut. It swelled in a hairy dome. He was unshaven, and shadows hung under his eyes.
