CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

No matter how many times she saw it, the New York City skyline never stopped impressing Scarlet Sloane. Tonight, the city’s lights sparkled in the distance as she cruised their hired SUV across the Brooklyn Bridge. Stealing a Daher-Socata TBM from the small airfield outside of Chicago had been easy enough with such light security and the powerful turboprop had made the journey in a little under ninety minutes. Slipping through JFK with the false passports provided by Orlando Sooke was even faster.

Now, leaving the East River behind them, she pulled off the bridge and headed down FDR Drive, her head spinning with all the possible outcomes a night like this might provide. Murder and mayhem, for sure, but the spectre of nuclear apocalypse was something else altogether. Something that made her feel sick to the pit of her stomach.

In the neon streets of the city, she turned right onto Broad Street and drove the Chevy north into Manhattan, crossing Wall Street before turning a final left on Nassau. With a nervous sigh, she pulled to a stop on the sidewalk in front of one of the large metal security barriers in position at either end of the famous eight-block street.

“We’re here, kids.”

Ryan turned to Kamala. “You know this city?”

“Not really,” she said with a shrug. “You probably know it better than I do.”

“A little,” Ryan said.

Scarlet was checking her gun. “I don’t think playing on GTA 5 fifty hours a week counts, boy.”

“I’ve spent some time in the real city, too, Cairo,” he said, turning to Ravi. “What about you?”

“Not at all, friend. When we are in Rio, then talk to me. I know that city better than anyone in the world. Here, I am a fish out of water.”

“It doesn’t matter,” Scarlet said coolly. “Not unless we get separated.”

“And then we meet back at the car,” Ravi said. “Right?”

Kamala laughed. “I might not know New York too well, but I know this car ain’t going to be here by the time we get back. It’s parked way too close to the Stock Exchange. Anti-terror cops will be all over it.”

“If we get split up,” Scarlet said, “We meet down in The Battery, it’s a park on the southern tip of Manhattan. Even Ryan could find it. And stay out of sight when you’re in there. We’ll do a Major Hawke after that and make it up as we go along.”

“Sounds good to me,” Ryan said.

Scarlet glanced at her watch. All right, listen up. Hawke and Lea and their teams are all in position and zero hour is in less than five minutes. Hawke’s already inside the museum. We drew the short straw, because the New York Stock Exchange has some of the chunkiest security in the city, much more than museums or piers.”

Ryan grinned. “Bitter?”

“Are you kidding? I live for challenges like this. The museum in San Francisco probably has the security of a childcare center.”

Ryan chuckled. “Funny, but I don’t know about that. Remember, Faulkner’s goons will be at all three locations, and they mean serious business.
