Chapter Seventeen

GREASER LOOKED UP FROM the computer at his desk and nodded toward the glass partition. "Ask her yourself. Erika goes on her lunch break in five minutes. Tee will take her lunch in a half hour. Stick around or come back. Either way, I'm not going to get in between whatever you two have going on."

"Nothing is going on between us." Shrader shoved his hands in his vest pockets.

He'd purposely stayed away from Tee for the past month. He rode for Killere, slept, and got up the next day to ride, making sure he had no free time to slip over to her apartment in a weakened moment.

She wasn't like the women he usually entertained. He appreciated that she was different, softer, more in the moment.

But, she was dead wrong about why he wanted to be with her. She'd need to figure that out on her own.

The office door opened. Shrader swung around, hoping it was Tee and found Erika. The young woman raised her brows at him before looking at Greaser.

"I'm taking my break." Erika glanced at him again and then went back out.

He turned and watched her speak to Tee, probably telling her he was in the office, and then left through the backdoor. Knowing he would only have one chance at speaking to Erika without Tee around, he left the building and rode his Harley around to the back.

Erika sat at the picnic table in the closed alley with a sack in front of her. He got off his Harley, set his helmet on the seat, and opened the locked gate with his pick set.

"Tee doesn't get off for a half hour," said Erika.

"I didn't come to see her." He sat down across from her at the table.

"Sure." Erika's gaze softened. "You came to visit me. Now, why don’t I believe you?"

He looked down the alley at the iron gate. "How's she doing?"

"As good as we can expect her to be with some weirdo out there trying to see her." Erika took half her sandwich and held it out to Shrader.

He took it, not knowing what else to do. "Rager filled me in. I've been staking out the apartment while she's there and trying to catch up on sleep while she's at work, and Greaser can watch over her."

"I didn't know you were watching over her. I’m sure she doesn’t know that either." Erika opened a can of Pepsi. "Have you seen anything suspicious?"

"Nothing but the usual coming and goings of an apartment complex." He took a bite of the sandwich. "No activity around the entrance of the apartment, though."

"That's good." Erika took a drink. "I know it bothers Tee that all the trouble seems to center around her."

"It ain't her fault."

Erika's gaze softened. "That's not how Tee thinks, though. She doesn't like to draw attention to herself."

"It's not attention." He finished the sandwich in one more bite.

Erika shrugged. "She doesn't think like you or me. Anything that happens around her can change her life. She's guarded because she doesn't want to lose what she's gained.
