A soft knock startled me awake. I sat up in bed, searching the room. I was alone inside.

The door unlocked, and I bolted to my feet. When it opened, Midnight’s musky vanilla scent floated into the room.

Hope blossomed in my chest. Maybe I’d get to see Cyrus tonight.

Her shoulders were tense as she sprinted to me. Her voice was as low as it had been in the garden as she said, “You’ve got to get out of here.”

“What?” My brain was trying to catch up. “I can’t leave without Cyrus and the others. We need to get them as well.”

“Uma is distracting the two guards.” She clutched my arm, dragging me to the door. “We’ve got to go now.”

“I thought we had tomorrow too?” As much as I was ready to get away from here, I didn’t want to leave her. I wasn’t ready. I’d thought I had one more day with her.

Sweat beaded her brow, and she sighed. “Me, too. I was looking forward to it, but your father left after he thought I’d fallen asleep early. Our window was open, and I heard him talking to someone. The person said that the prince of hell wanted to see him immediately, and Tate left. I’m afraid if you don’t leave now, you won’t have another chance.”

“He didn’t use the pack link?” Something wasn’t adding up. She shouldn’t have been able to hear him.

Her hold tightened. “That’s what I’m telling you. This person wasn’t a wolf, so I’m thinking demon. We’ve got to move while Ken, Nyko, Troy, Echo, and several other men are on their late-night run. We have to get you out while they’re away. After we meet with Uma, we’ll break the others free.”

That was enough to wake me up completely. I linked with Cyrus and Sterlyn and waited until I knew they were listening. We’re getting out of here tonight. Tate left to meet with a prince of hell. Midnight has a plan to get us out.

What about Mila and the others? Cyrus asked, completely alert.

He must have been awake already. We’re getting them too. I headed to the door as an issue popped into my head. “What are we going to do about the guards? They’ll alert the pack.”

We’re on our way to help, Sterlyn replied. Keep us updated.

“I have a plan, and it’s best if you don’t know what it is,” she said and yanked me out the door.

With no other choice, I followed her outside. Uma’s shaky voice filled my ears. “I…I don’t know. The toilet just stopped up, and Nyko is gone.”

“Are you serious?” one of the guards asked.

She cleared her throat. “Is that something I’d willingly lie about? Besides, you’d know if I were lying.”

I assumed Uma had clogged the toilet on purpose, and I smiled at her deviousness.

“Dude, you can be on shit duty.” The guy snorted. “I’ll stay here and keep an eye on these two buildings.”

“Um…why can’t you?” a deeper-voiced guy responded.

The more arrogant one’s voice shook with laughter.
