Chapter 17

Fortunately, before my silence can turn into something drawn out and awkward, Ben and Logan return, looking grim.

“What’s up?” I ask, glancing between the two of them. “Did you get the charms for us to take with us?”

“Yeah, I did.” Logan’s lips press together. “But before we go anywhere else, we need to head to the director’s office. Stone wants to see us.”

Shit. Stone wants to see us again so soon?

That can’t be anything good. God, this is such a disaster. My first job at IUM, and I feel like I’m two seconds away from making a mistake every time I turn around.

I look at Logan, who’s got a stoic expression on his face. I want to turn to him for comfort, but we’re in front of people, and I was the one who said nothing should happen between us. I’m pretty sure colleagues who just started working together don’t turn to each other for hugs just because they feel like they’re failing on their first day on the job. Or at least, I don’t do that.

“We should go, then,” I say instead, and Logan nods.

“Great!” Nick grins, stepping forward. “I’ll come with you.”

My stomach flutters, and at this point, I can’t even guess why. There are too many fucking possibilities. Still, I’m not sure if having Nick sitting in on our meeting with Stone is really going to help us.

I turn to him, giving a half-shrug. “Really, you don’t have to stay.”

“Thanks. But I meant what I said.” Nick winks at me again, and Logan’s jaw clenches. “I’m in this for the long haul.”

Unable to think of a good reason not to let him come, and not wanting to make Stone wait, I lead the way with the two men slightly behind me. Nick strolls through the halls of IUM as if he doesn’t have a care in the world, and Logan keeps his stoic expression in place, his usually relaxed features unreadable.

When we reach the director’s office, Stone gestures the three of us inside, not seeming surprised at all to see that Nick came with us.

“DeWitt. Parker.” He nods at us. Then he glances at Nick and smiles. “Nick, good to see you again.”

“Good to see you too, bud.”

Bud? Nick calls Director Stone, the head of IUM, his bud. Oh my God. I can’t tell if I’m jealous of his easy camaraderie with my boss or scandalized.

Stone focuses back on me and Logan, sucking in a breath through his teeth as he grimaces. “I hate to say this, since you’re two of our most promising new recruits, but I think we’re going to have to give this case to a senior team here at IUM. It’s shaping up to be a tricky one, so we’ll transfer you to a different mission and have another team take over this one.”

“No!”

I blurt the word out before I even think about it, then slam my jaw shut, shocked at my own boldness.

Stone stares at me, his eyes going a bit wide in surprise.
