Of course the first thing I did was open the paper. Three demands were written inside.

Louise Baker

Had she lost her mind? She expected to do the transfer in the tavern during the lunch rush? As far as I knew, Max wasn’t even planning to open the tavern.

But what if she’d killed Ruth precisely because she knew Max would close the tavern?

The blood rushed from my head. Surely Louise wasn’t that cold and calculating? I took a breath, waiting for the lightheaded feeling to fade. No, this couldn’t have been done by Louise, because if she’d killed Ruth for that purpose, where was Franklin? And if she took him, for what purpose? Even though I was fairly sure he’d met with Bart the other night, I couldn’t believe he’d work with Louise or hurt Ruth.

Was I really going to meet with Bart?

She’d indicated she’d give me information to help with my negotiations. Did she consider her highly vague insinuation about him killing a newborn information? I sure didn’t.

Besides, if I showed up on his property on her behalf, he was likely to kill me before I uttered a word. And dealing with Louise so I could achieve my own ends would make me no better than Wyatt.

No, there was no way I was doing this. Sure, she’d threatened to kill me, but she didn’t scare me as much as Bart Drummond did. Besides, she was setting me up. She’d admitted she didn’t expect to get one million, and in her note, she’d asked for more.

I needed to wait for Max or Marco to return.

I glanced at the back door of the tavern, debating whether I really wanted to go back in there and wait alone. I needed to be with someone who would have my back if the killer came for me next.
