MEANWHILE SEXTON BLAKE was in the vault of Dackworthâs Stores, in Oxford Street. With himâstern, tense, unhappy in various degrees depending upon their own particular grievance in the robberyâwere Mr. Phipps and Mr. Marks, of Venus Life and Property; Commander Grimwald and Chief Detective-Inspector Coutts, of the Yard; Mr. Hennessy, of Gallagherâs Safes and Strongrooms; and Gordon Dackworth Junr., of Dackworth Stores.
âGallagherâs safes I would not give to my child for a money box!â Mr. Marks was saying, bitterly.
This was unjust, and everybodyâincluding Mr. Marksâknew it; but it did express the kind of feeling in the air.
âThey open them without explosives even,â Mr. Marks complained.
Hennessy said: âThatâs because Gallagherâs safes canât be opened with explosives. If you remember, the last time they tried gelignite on one of our safes, we found a hand amongst the debris.â
Blake said: âThis is a repeat of the Hope Brothers jobâthe same craftsman, the same tools.â
The police detectives looked at Blake with interest.
âYou mean the new man?â Coutts said. âIn that case, I donât give you much for our chances of catching themânot until heâs got a record.â
Mr. Marks turned to Blake, nervous and edgy: âNever mind what the police sayâyou catch them. We donât want any defeatism. On top of your retainer you get another ten thousand pounds if you recover this money.â
âI shall do my best,â Blake said.
But his heart was heavy. It was another clean job. There were plenty of fingerprints on the safe, but none with a record.
Hennessy said, including Blake and the Scotland Yard men in the question: âWould you like me to get my man OâBrien to give you a report on the locks?â
They shook their heads, glumly. The locks had been turned and half a million pounds taken in negotiable currency, and they needed no report to tell them that.
