Berom women of central Nigeria follow the rules:

Rule #1: No sex before marriage.

Rule #2: Marry the guy your parents choose.

Rule #3: Take off after a few weeks of marriage and hook up with a guy you really want… or two… or three.

The Berom urge every married woman to pick a few lovers. After all, it’s win-win for everyone.

Lovers are the gift that keeps on giving. They bring you money and presents year after year. They even help you with the farming and other chores. What could be better? It’s social security plus lots of fun sex.

No need to sneak around. Your lover’s wife? No problem! You’ll be friends, practically sisters. She’ll help you if times get tough. You’re always there for her. The kids should also be good friends, and work and play together.

Your lovers will woo your husband, too. Gifts, money, loans, or whatever will please him, every year. Hubby figures, “We might as well be buddies.” After all, they have a mutual interest—you.

Besides, he gets to be the lover of other men’s wives. Plus, an ambitious man needs followers. And the best followers are—you guessed it—his wife’s lovers and his mistresses’ husbands.

Best of all, he avoids a divorce. Better to give you plenty of space for new friends, lovers and romantic adventures than have you dump him.
