Luna Saves the Lido

Luna was lucky her job allowed her to be anywhere. Winnie and Luna had been working hard for weeks now, putting together plans to save the Lido.

All the planning permissions, the boring paper work and the go ahead from men in suits were in place. Freddie had agreed to come early to help build a catwalk. Luna couldn’t wait to see him, he was always willing and had a wealth of unexpected and very useful talents. This was to be an extraordinary event.

The weekend of the show had finally arrived, and the train was due in any second; Luna and Winnie eagerly waited for it to bring the Lido heroes to them. And so it did with a toot; the sleepy seaside was soon flooded with well-dressed foxes, glamorous cats, photographers, garlands of flowers, huge balloons, benches, picnic hampers and anything else you could possibly think of. Luna was impossibly excited as she lay in bed that night making last minute lists in her head.

“Luna! Luna! Get up! You are so late! Everything has started without you! Winnie is doing her best but it’s a disaster!” yelled Freddie.

Luna launched herself out of the bed and looked at the clock. 11am! She had never slept this long, and today was so important – her very best friend was relying on her to save the thing she loved!

There was still time. She thought of tiny Winnie as she dressed, how very nervous her softly spoken little friend must be! Luna threw on her jacket, and ran out the door. Even late as she was Luna couldn’t help but smile at the soft rust corduroy in all it’s loveliness. It was her “I mean business” jacket and business Luna Lapin did mean.

When Luna arrived everything looked marvellous, Freddie’s catwalk was sturdy, the models were well dressed, a perfect contrast to the dilapidation, all frills and ball gowns, a throwback to former glory. Every possible seat was filled, the air was heavy with chatter in the Lido for the first time in a long time. It was quite something to see.

“Luna, get up here!” a wide eyed little mouse said. Luna was being pushed onto the stage, she had no time to prepare. It was fine, everything was fine. This was her moment.

And then the crowd began to laugh.

Luna looked around – what was so funny!?! Everyone was staring at her!

“Winnie? Reynard? What is going on?!”

“Luna, you are wearing your bloomers!”

This was a nightmare! Luna had forgotten to finish dressing!

So there she was, in front of hundreds, wearing her vintage linen bloomers and blouse and nothing else but a corduroy jacket.

“Somebody pinch me,” she muttered. This wasn’t a dream! This was really happening! What was a rabbit to do?

“And now may I welcome to the stand Miss Luna Lapin, lady of the Lido, saviour of swimming pools.” Brave little Winnie had taken the mike and everyone was clapping.

This was going to be okay after all. The rest of the show ran smooth as can be, everyone commented on how brave it was of Luna to show up in period dress.
