11. Now that you’ve stitched the elastic into place, sew up the side seam, catching the elastic ends in the seamline.

Trim away excess elastic to the edge of the seam allowance.

Most sergers have a special elastic applicator foot that you purchase separately that makes quick work of elastic application. Thread the elastic through the slot in the foot and then adjust the tautness of the elastic by tightening or loosening the adjustment screw on the foot.

Cuffed Pajama Pants

Pajamas have been elevated from something you sleep in to a fashion necessity. My friends at DIY Style teamed up two fashion-forward prints and created the pretty pair of practically perfect pajamas, pictured in the color section.

To make this project, you need the following materials in addition to your sewing survival kit (see Chapter 2):

An elastic-waist pajama or pant pattern.

2 to 2-1/2 yards of woven cotton or cotton/poly blend fabric such as poplin or flannel for pj’s (check the back of your pattern envelope for yardage requirements); if you’re new to sewing, ask the sales associate at the fabric store if they sell special pj prints. There are some very fun and creative choices available for all ages.

1/2 yard of a coordinating print for the cuff (optional).

One package of 1-inch-wide soft waistband elastic.

All-purpose sewing thread.

Tube of quality elastic thread.

Thread that matches the fabric.

Laying and cutting out your pj’s

Follow these steps to make the pj’s. This method eliminates the outside leg seam for a quick and comfy fit. Make these pants with or without the cuff for just about anyone in the family.

1. Find and cut out the front leg and back leg pattern pieces (see Figure 8-20a).

Many commercial patterns come with several sizes printed on one piece of pattern tissue, but when cutting out pattern pieces, leave some extra space outside your size’s cutting line. It makes cutting out the fabric easier.

2. Lay out the front and back pant pattern pieces on a large surface and tape them together, overlapping the outseams (the seams sewn on the outside of each leg) of each pattern piece the width of the seam allowance as shown in Figure 8-20b.

Check your pattern instructions to see whether your pattern calls for 5/8- or 1/4-inch seam allowances. Overlap the pattern pieces by that much.

3. Cut off the leg pattern at the finished hemline.

A decorative cuff is added at the bottom of these pj’s, so if you want the pj’s to come down to your ankles, adjust the pattern so the finished length is to your ankles. If you want the pj’s to be capri length, adjust the finished length so it is between your knee and ankle.

Figure 8-20: Overlap and tape the front and back leg patterns together at the outseams to make one leg pattern, cut off the hem allowances, and then make your cuff pattern.
