Maybe it was Wendyâs words, but I had trouble sleeping. The next morning, I drove over to the police station to talk with Detective Parker. Maybe it was all a bunch of nonsense, but I had a healthy fear of getting stabbed by a murderer. I knew that I should have left everything to the police and not gotten involved, but this case mattered to me now. Something about it had helped me enact the lying spell, and I wanted to follow it wherever it might lead. Maybe I had never had a big enough reason to do magic well. Maybe I just needed to go beyond myself for a while. Do more. Be more.
Walking into the reception area of the police station, I greeted most of the officers by name. Most everyone stopped by the restaurant at least once a week.
Detective Parker started to come around the corner, but when he saw me, he turned around and immediately started walking the other way.
âDetective Parker!â I called.
He stopped short and slowly turned around. âHello, Carly,â he said.
I put my hands on my hips. âIs there a reason youâre avoiding me?â I asked. âAnd was there a reason you declined to tell me that you hauled my sister to the station without telling me?â
Detective Parker took a breath and let it out slowly. âCarly, we have pretty strict rules in place. You know that. And Sheriff Wilcox is breathing down our necks about keeping protocol, because of the sensitive nature of the case.â
âSensitive nature my size four tush,â I said.
Chase leveled a look at me.
âOkay, geez, size six. Donât ever give me that interrogation stare again,â I amended. âThe point is, Detective, that Iâm afraid for my personal safety.â
Chase kept up a stare that would make even the most hardened criminal quiver. âCarly, this had better not be a joke.â
âIâm not joking. I wouldnât come to you if I didnât think this was serious. But Iâm afraid that whoever killed Piper is going to come after me.â
Chase scratched the copper stubble of his face. âReally? Whyâs that?â
Because I discovered someone was lying at a séance through magical means. âBecause Wendy Hunter had an assistant who died, and it matches up with her new television series, and the person who figures out the identity of the killer is the caterer, which is me, andââ
Chase held up both hands. âHold it right there. I think youâre letting this whole Wendy Hunter thing go to your head.â He glanced at the other detectives, who were nudging and whispering to each other. âGo on back to the restaurant, and donât worry so much.â
I stared in disbelief at Detective Parker. âSir, did you just âDonât worry your pretty little headâ me?â
Chase glanced down. âNo, but I think youâre like everyone else in the town, scared that there might be someone evil out there, looking to do more harm.â
All right, maybe he had a point there. My dreams had gotten progressively weirder and scarier as the days had worn on, and Wendyâs words had only dumped kerosene on my metaphorical anxiety fire.
