Breakfast in the grand hall was one of my least favorite times of the day. I didn’t enjoy most meals at the academy apart from dinner, as they would often magic roast potatoes from the kitchen, and I loved a good potato.

Gabby and Cilla had no such issue with food. Both of them stocked their plates full and ate like there was no tomorrow, though Cilla did it with a straight back and impeccable table manners.

“Who knew they had breakfast burritos in Limbo?” Gabby said, between vicious chews of her breakfast.

I eyed my granola bar without much of an appetite. But fuel was fuel, so I took a bite of it and chewed. Flavors burst across my tongue, and I sighed. I hated blueberries. Maybe it was because I’d spent most of my life eating the same blueberry-flavored gruel for breakfast in the Celestial Arena.

Celestial fae loved blueberries.

“Like… this is so good.” Gabby took a spoonful of yogurt into her mouth. “Ooh. Spicy. Spicy yogurt. What the hell? Why is that so good?”

“A lot of fae and human foods overlap,” Cilla said informatively. “We have similar byproducts and farming habits to humans, so while there are some differences in crops, you can usually find something on the table that you might find at a human banquet.”

“You should tell Sophie that,” Gabby said. “She’d be super into it. She’s all about human behavior.”

I lifted a finger to my lips, and Gabby winced.

“Sorry.”

We’d made a deal that we wouldn’t mention Arch Sophie in public, mostly because Castle Sin had ears, and then there was the fact that most of the fae here hated us and thought we didn’t belong. If they found out that the Arch of Sloth House had offered us an olive branch, I doubt it would curry any favor for her or for us. Mostly for us.

I still wasn’t entirely sure that the meeting we’d set with her in the clearing in Sloth Forest wasn’t a trap, but Gabby had insisted that she was cool, and would probably be “high as a kite” when we got there.

The more time I spent around Gabby, the funnier she became. Maybe because I was starting to understand her cultural references.

A fae passed by our table, fake tripped and splashed bright red juice all over Gabrielle’s shirt.

“Oops,” the second year said, with a quick laugh. “Sorry.” He was tall, wearing green for House Envy, and familiar. Reshal. One of a pair of vicious twins that Cilla had told me about.

“Fuck you, asshole,” Gabby said, glaring down at her ruined shirt.

I rose from my seat and stepped in front of him.

“What are you going to do?” Reshal asked with a chuckle. A group of Envy students nearby, new first years, laughed at the question. “Huh? Stare me to death?”

I balled up a fist and pretended to throw a punch. He brought out magic to stop it, but didn’t expect the sweep of my leg. It contacted the back of his knees, and Reshal toppled forward, putting out his hands to stop himself.
