CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Out of the corner of my eye, I caught movement. If I hadn’t had the heart-stopping revelation that I just did, I wouldn’t have jumped so high. As it was, my heart was racing by the time my brain comprehended that it was only Terry the Terror.

The guys must have been feeding and letting him out, because I’d forgotten about his existence. Guilt had me bending down to scoop him into my arms. He lapped up the attention like an ecstatic two-year-old that had been separated from Mom or Dad for a day.

“What do you mean they have someone in the fire department?” Brien demanded, straightening up.

“I got a call from my friend, Ansley. He said that the police shut down any investigation into other people being on the scene, chalking it up to an inexperienced newbie firefighter with a wild imagination.”

“How does that translate to them having an inside guy at the fire station?” Rory asked without his usual snark as he joined the conversation.

“Because their report follows along the same lines as the police’s. Nothing about that fire was normal, but everyone wrote it off as run-of-the-mill.”

Brien’s thick brows furrowed on his forehead. “I think we need to get your account on what happened now that you’re not half out of it with pain and exhaustion.”

I took a deep breath and walked them through the night once more. I started with noting how the flames likely wouldn’t be able to reach the mess hall, watching a figure run in there, and then heading inside to search for them. Recalling the events in a clear state of mind made me truly realize how many discrepancies there were.

How did the fire cross that gap? What could there have been to explode inside an empty cafeteria that had been abandoned for years? Of all the places, how had flames blocked every single exit, from the windows nearest to me to the double doors on the opposite side?

Ansley was right. Either I had the worst luck in the world, or the whole thing had been a setup from the get-go.

After a beat, Brien cleared his throat. “Do you have any theories about who may be Paolo’s inside man?”

I’d adamantly been avoiding the thought. “No.”

“Sasha—”

“I know, okay? More than ever, I believe you when you say Eli and I need protection. It’s… the guys at the station are like family. We put our lives on the line together and trust that we’ll have each other’s backs.”

“We understand,” Flint soothed. He glanced between Brien and Rory. “If I had been told that anyone on my unit was a suspected terrorist or had been working to betray us, I wouldn’t believe it either.”

“It’s not just that.” I scrubbed a palm down my tired face. “Most people in Stillwind have already heard the story because it’s Stillwind, but maybe you haven’t. When I was a few days old, I was abandoned on the doorstep of the fire department.” I laughed, but it lacked any actual humor.
