THE TELEPHONE RANG in the fourth floor apartment on the Quai Wilson in Geneva. Michael Pyle, who had been staring out the tall, narrow window past the green wrought-iron balcony at the blue lake and the mountains of Switzerland rising in the distance, turned away from the view and answered it.

“Bro!” came the greeting from his brother, Jason.

“Hey, Jase,” Michael said. “Where are you?”

“Washington,” his brother said. “Got in about a week ago and I’ve been pigging out on Burger King and Budweiser ever since. Funny the things you miss when you live overseas.”

“I’d say you’re a lucky bastard, but your cholesterol has probably gone through the roof,” Michael laughed. “How’s Dad?”

“He’s good,” Jason said. “You know, I’d have predicted he’d be slowing down a bit, you know, losing a yard off his fast ball? But I can’t tell any difference. He’s still got his A-game.”

“Yeah, everyone I talk to back at headquarters says he’s still on top of things,” Michael said. “So what’s up?”

“Good news,” Jason said. “I think I’ve got that bastard Dunne.”

Michael sat down on the plush sofa in the elegantly decorated lounge. He could hear France, his girlfriend, bustling about in the kitchen, preparing dinner. “Tell me about it,” he said.

Jason told his brother how he had made contact several months ago with someone who worked in the Pyle Industries accounting division. “I had to sorta let her believe that she and I were an item,” he explained, somewhat sheepishly. His brother chuckled. Jason’s mole, a thirty-something, never-married woman named Marcia, had agreed to keep her eyes open for him. And just before he got the word from his father that he could come back and work in the D.C. office, he had heard from Marcia. There were some discrepancies, she said. Expenditures that were not budgeted. Requests for cash, sometimes in large amounts. Expense reports that showed some unusual charges. Nothing that by itself would raise the eyebrows of an auditor, not even one from the IRS. But Marcia had noticed that all these unusual items had come from one place: the office of Jack Dunne.

“I’ve got it all down on paper,” Jason said excitedly. “Item after item.”

“How much does it all add up to?” Michael asked.

“Couple hundred thousand,” Jason said.

“That’s not a whole lot,” Michael said. “Are you sure he’s stealing? Maybe there’s some explanation for it all.”

“Goddam it,” Jason exploded, his voice echoing tinnily from the telephone speaker. “Do you want to get rid of that bastard, or don’t you? I’m telling you, I’ve got the goods on the son-of-a-bitch. When I present the evidence to Dad, he’ll have to fire the guy.”

“I dunno,” Michael said. He was always the more cautious of the two brothers. “Maybe you should let me take a look at it before you show it to Dad.”

“Don’t be a pussy,” his brother said.

“I’m not,” Michael protested. “It’s just being sure. When you go up against someone like Dunne, you gotta be sure. Otherwise, the blowback might rebound on both of us.
