Chapter Twelve

VITALY AND ROSTISLAV watched as Rook and Kyna trained on the obstacle course. Since Rook was the only one they had who knew what to expect on a witch’s becoming quest, they trusted his judgement on what to put her through.

Over the course of her training, they discovered he was also the only witch who had the stomach to push her hard enough. Most of their other soldiers knew of Kyna’s history from Rook’s stories, and held her as a priestess, or at the very least someone they refused to hurt.

Those who were more involved with Vitaly, even maids, knew of the bond they’d made, and regarded her as the queen priestess. They also would never raise a hand to her, which he expected, but it didn’t help in her training.

Kip couldn’t bring himself to do anything too difficult with her, considering her emotional struggles to adjust. They’d employed him to school her in the fundamentals of each element. He’d also pulled his magic through her, and her through him, to help her get a better feeling for working earth through the others.

What they did together impressed Vitaly and would get more attention later. He assumed with even better results after her mastery.

Vitaly bonded with her at least twice a day, and implanted what she would need to know to manipulate her thoughts. When they worked on that, she managed to keep him out, which gave him confidence she could keep them all out if the need arose.

He made sure to include her in all the meetings that he held with Kip and Rook, and even a few with Rostislav. It was his hope she would feel like a real part of both the witches and vampires. When the time came, he wanted her to decide to stay with him, without need for force.

When she wasn’t preparing, Kyna lived a normal life, and even performed a few ceremonies. The common witches all felt a reverence for the power she possessed and when combined with her down to earth nature, they instantly loved her.

“She still struggles with the climbing wall.” Rostislav turned from the window.

“All of them do, this course was designed for soldiers, and elite humans. Kyna doesn’t have the right build to ever go over it with ease. Destiny was a soft witch, with no training and no bond to enhance her. Kyna will have some, and my blood should help.” Vitaly turned to Rostislav.

“She misses her family. That could be problematic in time.” His claws snapped against each other. “If we have to make her stay, witches don’t fare well under those conditions.”

“In time, she will have a family here. Kip and Rook are both smitten. She is motivated to stop Matvei from having more masters. That makes the need for us to push and play games on that matter vanish.” Vitaly looked back when he felt the magic outside grow more intense. “We won’t have to make her stay, and if we do, I’m prepared to do that as well.
