Chapter Seven

I followed behind Ellie as we maneuvered through the dark streets, doing our best to blend in. Her all-black outfit had successfully achieved this; my burnt orange jacket, however, stood out even in the dark of the night. Even worse? While Ellie remained calm, having had years as an assassin to have prepared her for anything, I felt myself coming undone. The buzzing in my veins indicated I wasn’t as in control as I had hoped.

Sooner or later, the flames would ignite and take over.

We walked a block away from the Bilson Corporation, careful to avoid detection, and only crossed the street when we were certain we hadn’t been followed. Arabella had instructed us to wait nearby. Ellie, however, had other plans.

“I don’t do well with wait and see,” she’d told me. “I was trained to act, not react.”

“Well, that makes one of us,” I teased. Despite trying to sound calm, my voice gave way to my nerves, breaking in the process. Still, I followed blindly because trying to be a hero still seemed like a better option than returning home.

Ellie led us behind the strip of buildings. We stayed within the blanket of the shadows, doing our best not to be discovered by the hovering guards. Which was a lot easier than it sounded. The moment Arabella appeared, the guards looked to be on high alert. Lucky us. “Who is Cole?” I finally asked.

“Someone we want to avoid,” Ellie answered.

“Is he dangerous?”

She shrugged. “Physically? Not really. But he can read our thoughts.”

To me? The idea of Cole getting in my head was nothing to be all that concerned about; I had barely managed to contain my powers as it was. To think I could think of a method of attack beforehand? It was unlikely. Ellie, on the other hand, was always watching and waiting for the perfect time to attack.

For Ellie, it was vital to study both her surroundings and her subjects. She listened for the slightest change in movement. For the way a person’s voice would change. How their eyes would shift. It was all a part of her training. If Cole had the chance to get inside of her thoughts, he could stop her before she had the chance to make a move.

“Wasn’t there another way to rescue this lady?” I asked. Honestly, I feared we had allowed ourselves to fall victim to Arabella’s own stubbornness. “I mean, Arabella possibly could not have pissed everyone off when she left, right?”

Ellie didn’t answer but the grin that sprung upon her lips had been answer enough.

We rounded the corner of the last building before Bilson Corporation and Ellie motioned for me to kneel beside her. A group of men stood in the back with guns slung across their chests. Beside them stood a woman in an all-white ensemble. A briefcase hung from her hand as one of the guards stepped away to escort her to a sedan that had been idling nearby.

“Who is that?” I whispered.

“That would be a very good question.
