Jennifer placed the package on the table in front of Melanie. "Go ahead, open it up. I hope it's what you want."

Melanie gently opened the ends of the package. She looked inside and a smile came over her face as she reached in to pull out the dress. "Oh, wow! It's perfect." She reached in the package again and retrieved nylons, a bra, panties, and a pair of black pumps. "I hope they let me wear some of this. I haven't had decent clothes in years, let alone nice clothes like these. They just said that if I had something special that I might be able to wear it. All they said is that it had to be something that buttoned or opened in the front somehow so they can put a stethoscope and an EKG on me. They have to know the exact second I expire." Melanie gave Jennifer a big grin.

"I know they will let me wear the dress and maybe the hose. I don't know about the rest of the stuff."

"I guess I'll find out soon enough. I'll keep it all on until they tell me to take them off. I hope they at least let me keep the nylons on; after all, they're going to be putting straps on my legs." Melanie looked toward the ceiling. "It's funny how I felt the first time I heard the judge say you're sentenced to die by the infliction of lethal gas. I had never been so scared in my life. Now, I'm sitting here with you worrying about how I'm going to look. The warden here said the girls over in GP could do my hair before they take me to the state penitentiary. She arranged it for this afternoon. I've never had my hair done before."

"I have to ask you something again. Are you sure and is it your wish that no more appeals be filed on your behalf?"

“That’s right. I just want it over with. I’m tired”

“What if evidence surfaces that proves that you are innocent?”

“Only then, ha! As I said before, that’s not going to happen.”

"The reporters are here. Are you ready?" Jennifer asked.

"If I'm not ready by now I never will be." Melanie replied.

"The questions are going to be rough. Do you think you can handle them?"

"Yeah, let's get it over with."

Jennifer walked to the door. "We're ready."

Three female guards entered the room and said to Melanie, "stand and put your hands behind your back." One put handcuffs on Melanie. They led her out of the visitor’s room to a large doorway just outside the cell block. Melanie stood in the corner right outside the door. Jennifer stood off to the side. Melanie's eyes darted around the room as she awaited reporters to arrive. She was dressed in a simple light blue prison dress that buttoned up the front and a pair of thick sold flip-flops. Her hair hung loosely past her shoulders. Within a few seconds reporters started filing in. Melanie's eyes fixed on them as they came into the room.
