Amnesia

Amnesia is the inability to recall something. In therapy, for example, when a person comes out of a deep hypnosis session they often will not remember anything that was said to them during the session. They were not asleep, as they come right back when you ask them to return to normal conscious awareness. (You can always tell when a client falls asleep, and you gently awaken them to continue since the sleeping mind is not very receptive.) When you inquire as to what happened during the session, they recall little or nothing because they were in a deep state. This is like someone daydreaming in class while the teacher is discussing the homework assignment. When the teacher asks that student to repeat the assignment, there is no response. The student was mentally inside somewhere. Although amnesia is used more commonly in conventional hypnosis than in self-hypnosis, it can be useful as a deepening tool.

TECHNIQUE—Tell yourself as you are beginning your deepening that you do not remember the number three, and that your inability to remember the number three will take you into a deeper space inside. Repeat this suggestion several times. Count down mentally from ten to one as your deepening method. If your mind responds easily to amnesia, you will not remember the number three as you count to one. If you prefer, tell yourself that you cannot remember the day or month. This helps take your mind out of linear time. This method can also be useful to help break a habit pattern. For example, if someone smoked when on a coffee break, amnesia could be used to suggest that when on their break they will not remember that they smoke cigarettes. It sounds funny, but it can work.
