Chapter Sixteen

Marion

After my talk with Varia, I go in search of Kintar, wanting to see him now that I’ve come to something of an understanding with myself. But when I reach his quarters, they stand empty. Likewise, he’s not in his office space on the lower deck.

I could just call him on his comm, but that seems weird when we’re on the same ship. Still, I’m starting to consider doing just that when Solair announces over the ship-wide hail that we’re having an emergency meeting in the galley.

That probably explains where Kintar was and what he was up to. Solair’s probably been keeping him busy. That means I was right not to call and bother him.

Deciding that the meeting will probably need snacks and refreshments, I hustle down to the galley early and join Jax in baking up curd flake crackers. They’re made of partially processed cheese and a lot tastier than they sound, especially with an Alzhon arrow squid eye as garnish.

I’m proud of the way we get them made and set on trays before the first arrivals even come into the galley. But I feel sorry for Jax, who is carefully avoiding looking me right in the eye. I guess Kintar and I embarrassed him more than we realized the other day.

Vowing to be more vigilant in keeping the door locked in the future, I help him set the trays on the various tables and then go to work placing pitchers of elderberry wine and empty metal cups in each spot.

Our fellow crewmen filter in, and soon the galley is teeming with Kilgari and humans, but no sign of Kintar. Solair enters, leading in three strangers.

Well, the big one is definitely an Odex. No mistaking that. Good grief, he’s huge. The woman behind him is not one of the Frontier refugees, and I should know. She’s pretty for a skinny chick, except for those eyes. This woman has taken life before and is set to do so again, and I could tell that even if she weren’t wearing military gear.

The third sapient in tow is of a race I haven’t yet encountered, with smooth dark skin and scale-like hair. His broad features and stout body remind me of a walking boulder. This stranger is practically naked, wearing a brightly colored loincloth around his waist and a necklace. Other than the glittering silver crown, with seven spires topped by golf ball sized pearls, it’s all he wears.

Judging from his bearing, he’s somebody important. When Solair makes the introductions, it turns out there’s a good reason. Apparently, this is King Meaha, a monarch from Glimner. Curious.

The big Odex is Tsurk, and I can tell one of his eyes is a cybernetic replacement. When Solair introduces his mate as Regan, a former “patient” of the Blue Dawn project, a murmur goes up through the crowd.

At this point Kintar finally shows his face. I smile and wave at him to come over. Though his gaze clearly falls on me for a split second, and he knows I’m here, he just turns away sullenly.
