Having everything out in the open makes things easier, but there’s still a lot of tension, anger, and hurt between us. I’m glad I know what Jazz is struggling with, but some of the things he said still weigh heavily on my mind.

The next morning, he finds me in the kitchen having a second cup of coffee while Zac and Ben are down in the training room with Finn.

“You’re angry with me.”

“You said a lot of hurtful things. About me, about Finn.”

“I know.”

“I can’t just forget that, no matter how much I want to.”

Finn has been my saving grace this past week. Helping him get to grips with moving to the guild house has been just the distraction I needed.

“You shouldn’t have to forget. I said those things. I didn’t mean them, not all of them, but I said them. I was angry, lashing out, trying to hurt you…”

Tears escape my eyes, no matter how hard I try to hold them back.

“Trying to push me away, just like Ben did. You guys seriously need to work on your communication skills.”

He softens his tone, his eyes sad.

“Duly noted. But I want you to know how sorry I am. I hope, one day, you’ll be able to forgive me.”

He reaches across the table for my hands, holding them between both of his. I hold his gaze, willing him to hear me.

“You’re an idiot. But you’re my idiot.”

The pain is stark in his eyes. He’s still convinced he’s going to lose me. I try again.

“You’ve got all that anger inside you, right?”

He nods.

“Then use it and fight, Jasper. Fight for us, for me and you.”

His thumbs stroke my palms. “There’s just so much danger, so much risk. I don’t want to hurt you. Even being alone with you right now, even touching you, is a risk.”

“How is isolating yourself going to help? How is it going to make things less risky?”

He shakes his head.

“Maybe it’s not, but I can’t stand the thought of hurting you. Being close to you and unable to touch you… it’s driving me crazy, Indy. Back in Alicante, we were so close, and I wanted to so much. But my control was on a knife-edge. I could feel it slipping.”

No wonder he ran and has done his best to keep me at arm’s length since then.

“Where do we go from here?” I need a plan, something practical. Something I can do.

“Your focus needs to be on Finn right now. There might only be a dozen half-dragons in the world. You need him on your team.”

I hear the implication loud and clear.

“Oh, but half-shifters are a dime a dozen. You’re interchangeable, huh? I should just switch you for another model.”

I’m angry again. It feels better than hurt, or maybe just easier. Taking a deep breath, I let it out slowly, trying to push past the anger to something more constructive.

“You are just as important to me as Finn. You’re not just some random half-shifter. You’re the first person who ever truly saw me, Jazz.
