Sixteen

What a glorious day. Once again I was out with Chester, but this time I’d chosen to bring him to Barton Pond where there was a grassy area for him to run, and access to the water so he could swim. No wooded trails for us today. It meant I’d have to give Chester a vigorous towel dry and then brush him out, but it was worth it to watch his antics as he dove into the pond after the sticks I threw and proudly brought them back to lay at my feet.

“I had a feeling I’d find you here.”

Startled I jumped a one-eighty, and there was Tyler.

“And what feeling was that?” I held out my hand. He took it and gently drew circles in my palm with his thumb.

“You wouldn’t want to be reminded of Heather by walking in the woods.”

I gave a rueful smile. This man completely understands me.

“Sit down,” Tyler said, pulling me to the ground beside him and putting an arm across my shoulders. I wrapped an arm around his waist and let my head rest against his neck. It felt good and we stayed that way, not needing to talk, ‘til a soaking wet Chester came romping back and shook himself with great energy right next to us.

“Eek.” I crab-walked backwards but too late; I was soaked. Taking my behavior as an invitation to play, Chester bounded forward and stuck his great big slobbery face into mine. Ah the joys of a pet-sitter. I could hear Tyler laughing as I put my arms over my face and rolled onto my hands and knees. I glared at him and he hurried over to help me to my feet. I shrugged off the hand he put under my arm and struggled to my feet.

Slobber was running down my face, but as I swiped at it with the back of my hand I realized it was tears. The shock of all that had been happening suddenly caught up with me. Heather’s death, the shock of finding she had a husband, the VA inspector making life difficult, Scott Hamm struggling to live a normal life, Neve Reed falling apart, Runyon Reed carrying the burden of caring for his wife, Dennis Haggerty turning on Erik, and Erik grieving for Heather. Why it hit me at that precise moment in time, I have no idea, unless being laughed at was the last straw. I began to shake.

“Honey, what’s the matter?” Tyler said.

“Nobody believes Heather was murdered and… and everyone wants to k_k_kill Erik, and I l_look a mess…and I don’t know why I’m crying.”

“Oh, sweetheart.” Tyler’s arms were around me, strong and sure, and I let myself melt into his embrace.

“You’re crying because you care. And we won’t let anyone hurt Erik.” He looked down into my eyes. “And we’ll find out what happened to Heather.”
