Chapter 3

Ella

After I send my twin off to do my job, I take a nap to chase away the brain fog, waking up at eleven to grab a coffee at the shop around the corner. I feel almost luxurious as I settle at my desk with my books in front of me. Some of it isn’t exactly the most riveting content in the world, but I know it’s important stuff to learn.

When I was thirteen, our dad and one of his friends opened up a sandwich shop on a whim. Just soup, sandwiches, and gourmet bottled sodas, and it was still a disaster. My mom called it from the beginning, saying it took more than a big personality to run a food service business. But I’d loved that little place, and I’d been bitten by the restaurant bug. I meant to do it right, though. And that meant learning everything I could from my coursework.

I take a quick break for lunch, eating a tomato and some cheese from my fridge, wishing I had a nice, crusty baguette, but not wanting to leave my books now that I was in the zone. At around five, I’m pulled from my notes by an annoying buzzing. I finally find Dani’s phone under the shopping bag of clothes she left behind. I make a mental note to get her a proper overnight bag for Christmas and go to put her phone on silent. We’d traded phones for the day since my boss preferred to communicate with me mostly through text messages. I couldn’t risk her blowing our cover by missing his messages.

The texts on Dani’s phone keep rolling in, increasingly urgent, from someone named Carla.

Where are you?

Are you coming in to work tonight?

You need to get your ass in here if you want to keep your job!

My stomach clenches with the last message. If Dani loses her job because she’s helping me out, I’ll never forgive myself. Between her very rare singing gigs, she finally found a fairly stable job as a ring girl at some upscale boxing club in Brooklyn. Sometimes, she gets to serve drinks and has been bragging about her outrageous tips. If she loses her job, who knows when she’ll find something that good again, and then she’ll end up losing her apartment and become my long-term roommate. My sister is my favorite person in the world, but I cannot live with her if I want to get anything done.

I can’t exactly go get her though, and I really want to keep up this blissful studying for a few more days. Holding my breath, I text back, asking when the shift starts.

Just get here as soon as you can.

Okay, so I put on one of Dani’s outfits and prance around a boxing ring, holding up a sign for a few hours. No big deal. I can bring my textbook and study in the back between matches. I’ll come up with a bout of food poisoning after a few hours and get the next couple days off for Dani so she can keep working for me.
