Chapter 10

I took the stairs up to my apartment two at a time. There, waiting at the door, was Jared. And I could tell, slouched against the wall, head down and arms folded, pouting, that he didn’t have good news.

“What is it? Did you find the bottle?”

“Have you seen the news tonight?”

“I’ve been busy.”

He glanced down at my clothing. “Is that my hoodie?”

“Might be.” I unlocked both the handle and the deadbolt, and headed for the remote.

“I wouldn’t do that, if I were you.”

But I couldn’t be bothered to heed his advice. I tuned in to the local news, where Jared stood, hours ago, in front of the police station. Instead of his usual dynamic reporter speak, inserting inflection and pauses where they weren’t needed, he sounded flat. His words were damn near mumbled, in fact. It was clear that this was a report he would’ve preferred not to give. “ . . . now learning that police have been contacted by a witness to last Thursday’s horrific murder of a local construction worker. A good Samaritan, who has chosen to remain anonymous, has come forward with photographs of . . .”

“He sent them the fucking pictures?” Even as I said it out loud, I somehow wasn’t surprised.

Jared stuffed his hands in his pockets, doing his level best to stare at the floor. “Looks that way. I didn’t see the photos myself.”

The repeat broadcast continued. “. . . have also been able to identify a suspect using the latest in forensics, testing evidence found at the scene of . . .”

“What evidence? What’d they test?”

“Blood.”

“Blood? You’re sure?”

“Yeah. You said you were careful, right?”

“Of course. I left nothing behind. Nothing at all useful, at least. I’m sure of it.”

“What about the blood on the wall? Where your name was written?”

“Well, if I’d been tapped for a half-pint of the red stuff, I think I’d remember that. It wasn’t my blood on the wall, Jared. There’s no way. It had to be Kenneth’s blood.” But, what if it had been mine? What if, somehow, Ray had got his hands on a large supply of my blood, without me even knowing it? That was crazy, right? Impossible? “Wait, did they say it was my blood on the wall?”

“Banks and his men didn’t mention whose blood it was, no. Just that they’d collected some DNA evidence, and had linked it to someone in town. A person of interest, I believe they said. That’s all they’d tell me.”

“Maybe they were talking about someone else.” But I knew better than that.

Jared took a step toward me and rested his palm against the small of my back. “The police have the bottle, too, and they were able to lift a partial print from it.”

“Was it mine?”

“Again, they didn’t say, but it gets worse. You know that bartender you asked me to look into last week?”

“Becca?”

“Yeah, her. The police talked to her, since Kenneth was one of her regulars. And she told them you were at her house last week.
