In the passenger seat of a borrowed Sheriff’s Department cruiser, Kate held the phone to her ear. The lush green landscape of a burgeoning New England spring under any other circumstances would’ve been a sight to behold. Instead, it passed her by without so much as a glimpse. “Okay. I’ll text you where we’re staying after we arrive.”

“It feels like this investigation has turned on its end pretty quickly,” Nick replied from the other end of the line.

“The escalation implies the unsub doesn’t care if he gets caught. He killed a cop. Can’t get much more brazen than that,” Kate said.

“When an unsub has nothing left to lose, everyone’s at risk. Listen, Kate, just stay alert. I know you know what you’re doing, and I know Surrey’s a smart guy but just keep your eyes open, okay?”

“I will. Listen, I have to go. I’ll call you later. Bye.” She ended the call and peered at the road ahead.

“Everything okay?” Surrey asked.

“Just fine.”

“Not that you asked for my opinion, but I know it can’t be easy being married to someone else in the business. What Scarborough did by leaving was good for you—for your career.”

“It was the best thing for both our careers and our marriage,” she replied unequivocally.

“Sure, yeah.” Surrey made a right turn. “Looks like this is the place. The detective handling the investigation into Captain Martin’s death and the Hargroves’ said this was the closest motel to the station.” He pulled into the parking lot and stopped at the front of the main building. “We should get checked in.”

“Yep.” Kate stepped out of the car.

“Evening.” Surrey approached the front desk. “Two rooms, please.”

“Yes, sir. How many nights?” The young man asked.

“That all depends. We’re FBI here to help local law enforcement. We’ll start with tonight and see how things go if that’s all right with you.”

“Of course, sir. You just let us know what you need.” The attendant typed in his computer. “Two rooms. Okay. Here are your keys. I put you on the same floor.”

Surrey took the keys. “Thanks very much.” He started away, handing Kate her key.

“Have a good evening,” the man replied.

“Oh,” Surrey stopped in his tracks. “You got any place to eat around here?”

“Yes, sir. The café around the corner is open until 10 pm.” He checked the time. “You should make it in plenty of time.”

“Perfect. Thanks again.” Surrey continued toward the elevators and turned to Kate. “Do you want to get settled and then head over to the café for a bite? I don’t know about you, but I haven’t eaten all day.”

“Sure. That sounds good. I’ll meet you back here in twenty minutes.”
