Automated deprovisioning of access is just as, if not more, important to get right. People come and go from, or simply change roles within an organisation, on a continuous basis. Adjusting permissions to align with a person’s current role in a timely fashion is a critical security control, but one that is often overlooked. It’s not uncommon to find the highest tenured employee is the one with the most privileges on a given system, as permissions have been added to roles, but never removed.

In the majority of cases, a departure is on good terms, and the person leaving just wants to move on to the next chapter of their professional life. In others, the departure may not be so cordial. It’s in these cases where it’s vital to make sure that an aggrieved former insider’s access is removed as soon as possible.
