In the smart grid perspective, the privacy of personal data or information is the most important aspect. As it relates to information concerning persons which can be used to identify the persons directly or indirectly. This type of information can be obtained through the fine-grained information of energy usage recorded by the smart meter. Although, the other dimensions can be related to the smart grid because of new types of energy usage. Example: the location of an electric vehicle (EV) can be known from a charging station, if the same charging station is constantly used. This shows that the owner of the EV frequently visits the location for a purpose. This can fit into privacy of personal behaviour.
System Model
The system model considered by the majority of the privacy preservation schemes in smart grids consist of three major components, which are: smart meters (SM), data collector and third party systems as depicted in figure 3. The smart meter is located at the customer side i.e. HAN, BAN or IAN. The data collector collects data from a group of SMs for onward transmission to the third party systems for analysis and processing. The data collection function is performed by entities named differently by various schemes. Some of the names used to represent the data collector are: base stations, data collection units, aggregator, or gateway among others. Also the third party systems in the privacy preservation schemes are represented with different terms based on their functionality. Some third party systems includes: operation center or control center and trusted authority among others.
