CHAPTER ELEVEN
Cole
FOCUS AND PAY attention to the road.
I kept repeating those words, over and over as I hopped on the motorcycle and sped away from the academy, from my friends, and from Melody, not caring at all if my headlights blinded anyone. It literally felt like I was leaving a piece of my heart, a piece of my soul, back there and it tore my insides to shreds. How was I supposed to be apart from the one person I cared for more than anything, to the only person Iâve ever been happy with, without feeling like Iâd lost a part of myself?
Damn, that sounded so cheesy, but it was true.
I wanted more time with Melody. It felt like these past few months had been nothing but training, training, and more training. Sheâd be so dead tired after dinner, sheâd go straight to bed. I just wanted to take her to see the town, do âcoupleâ things, have more dates, but maybe lay off the wine for a little while.
Not wanting to tell her goodbye verbally, I told her in the only way I could; with my hands and my lips, pouring every emotion into our bond. I felt everything she was feeling: worry about my safety, guilt that if this plan failed, sheâd blame herself, and fear of the unknown.
The conversation I had with Blake replayed in my head.
âCole, donât do this,â heâd pleaded from the front steps as I mounted my bike. After Iâd left Melodyâs room, Blake had followed me all the way to the garage and out onto the driveway, begging me to stop and think about this plan before I left. Believe me when I say that I wanted nothing more than to put as much distance between The Brotherhood and us as I could, but then we would always be looking over our shoulder, worrying whenâand ifâthey would strike again.
It wasnât worth it.
âI have to,â Iâd gritted out.
âNo, you donât. Come on, man. Think about Melody.â
Iâd flinched, just the slightest bit, because I did think about her. Dammit, she was the reason I was doing this! Why couldnât he see that? I was willing to bet that if the tables were turned, and he was trying to keep his sister safe, he would be doing the same damn thing. Iâd had to leave, right then and there, before he said something that wouldâve truly hit me deep and changed my mind.
Iâd revved the cycle, hoping he got the hint that I didnât want to talk anymore. âSee ya, Blake.â I brought my feet off the ground, and hauled ass away from the academy, Blakeâs shouts of my name fading in the distance.
A carâs horn from behind me broke me out of my thoughts. I jolted, not realizing the light in front of me had turned green and I hadnât moved. I lifted my arm up in apology and raced forward.
No one knew what truly lay within the walls of The Brotherhoodâs compound. For some reason, I pictured a military base-like area.
