“Thanks for bringing me here, Zav.” I patted his scaled flank as we soared over the forests of Veleshna Var.

The last time we’d visited, the foliage had been blue and purple; today, it was silver and pale green and dusted with snow. This was strange to me, since the trees appeared deciduous, and winter had clearly come, but Zav had said the elves used magic to change the colors of the leaves. Maybe that included keeping them on branches throughout the winter—or maybe trees on other planets didn’t lose their leaves.

“I don’t think I’m going to be welcome,” I added, “but it’s time to deal with my stalker, one way or another.”

If he was from here, maybe I could show up on his mother’s doorstep and leave a calling card.

The elves will not dare reject the mate of a dragon, Zav said telepathically.

“I think you said that last time, and they rejected me while inviting you inside for sex.”

One elf did that. The males had no interest in having sex with me.

“That’s surprising given your allure. I’d expect you to get passes from the other side too.”

I will have sex with nobody but my mate. Prepare yourself. We will pass through their defensive barrier.

Remembering the unpleasant zing from last time, I braced myself and laid my chest against his back. Zav always promised his magic would keep me from falling off, but the lack of a saddle or a harness hadn’t stopped making me nervous.

A painful buzz similar to electricity zapped my body, and I grimaced. I also braced myself for rejection from the elves, worrying they wouldn’t let me in to see my father or send a message to Freysha that I had come to visit. Maybe my telepathic range would be great enough that I could reach out to her. But picking her out inside a city of tens of thousands of elves would be a challenge to my abilities.

As soon as we passed through the invisible barrier, squawks sounded, and I sat up. Huge birds were flying toward us, huge saddled birds with elven riders. They carried bows and swords, and their blond and silver braids flew behind them as their avian mounts flapped their powerful wings.

Since my father had ridden one of those birds the last time I’d been here, I searched the riders, hoping he had recovered and would be among them. He had been the only elf interested in talking to me. But not surprisingly, he wasn’t there.

“Is this the welcoming committee, or are we about to get shot at?” I asked.

They would be incredibly foolish to shoot a dragon.

“What about the rider on the dragon’s back?”

Also foolish.

One of the birds banked and flew alongside Zav, though the bird didn’t look pleased at getting close. Its beady eyes watched him, and it kept trying to scoot farther away. The rider used magic—I could sense him applying it—to force his mount to stay close. Assuming he meant to speak, I tapped my translation charm.

“Noble dragon,”
