Chapter Twelve

After being awakened by the security alarm, Karlie had a hard time going back to sleep. When she finally did, she slept until almost noon. She climbed out of bed and stretched, her mind trying to come up with something to do to fill the rest of the day. Not much of a television watcher, she could read a book but not for hours and hours. She shuffled past the living room where Heath weaved thin branches together. “Trap doors?”

He nodded. “I’ve already got my coffee. Pot’s still hot.” He glanced up and smiled. “You’re beautiful when you first get out of bed with your rosy cheeks and mussed-up hair.”

Her hand went to smooth her hair, and she entered the kitchen, desperately wanting him to kiss her again. She thought about being the one to make the move until she saw her mother seated at the kitchen table. With a sigh, she poured a cup of coffee and stared out the window toward the woods. “I wish this was all over with. Staying cooped up in this cabin will accomplish nothing but drive me crazy. My father has to know we’re waiting for him. We need to draw him out.”

“Heath will come up with a plan. Be patient.”

“Not one of my virtues.” She took a sip of her coffee and rejoined Heath in the living room. “Mom said you’re working on a plan.”

“I’m mulling one around in my head.”

“Mind sharing?” She arched a brow.

“I don’t have it all worked out yet, but I’m trying to devise a way to wreak enough havoc with his minions so Bartelloni is drawn out of hiding to come for you himself.”

“Sounds good. What’s the first step?”

“Finding the new hiding place for the men we encountered at the mall. Want to take a ride later?”

“Absolutely.” She smiled around the rim of her cup, pleased they had something to do until dark. “There are several vacant buildings and abandoned barns in the area. They’d make good hiding places. If they don’t pan out, I’ll show you the caves tomorrow.”

He nodded and held up a five-by-five-foot “door” covered with leaves. “That ought to cave even if someone your size steps on it. I need to make a few more, but we should go while we have enough hours to search well.” He propped it against the wall.

Her mother declined accompanying them, saying someone had to stay and watch over the monitors. She sat in the closet like a miser guarding her gold. “Don’t worry about me. The alarm will work. If the doors and windows get locked because of a breach, I’ll text you to stay away.”

“Like that will happen,” Karlie muttered, leaving her alone. Heath would have them back to fight alongside her mother as fast as he could. With Shadow by her side, Karlie joined Heath outside next to his vehicle. Every line of his body showed tension as he scanned the yard. He’d parked his car as close to the house as possible.

“The most danger is from the house to the yard.
