Former actress Teri Gault and her husband were struggling financially when she decided to launch The Grocery Game in 2000.

"We were very broke," explained Teri. "I was rolling coins at that point to buy groceries."

She was also extremely busy, working three jobs to make ends meet. Despite the lack of funds and lack of time, Teri got creative and managed to stretch both to get the company off the ground. She got an almost-free computer by committing to a two-year Internet service contract, signed up with a Web site hosting company that offered the first three months free, built her own Web site, bought a business license—also with rolled coins—and she was off and running.

Today, TheGroceryGame.com is a multi-million dollar business. It's a unique service that provides members with information on rock-bottom sales at their local grocery

stores—matched up with available coupons to help save shoppers 50, 60, even 70 percent off their grocery bills every week. "Teri's List," as it's called, provides info on published and unpublished sales, so that shoppers can save money and time once they hit the grocery store. Members, a.k.a. "gamers," describe it as addictive.

Teri is unusual in that she funded her company "organically" over the years—she never borrowed money from anyone, and let her sales fund growth and expenditures.

"It's always been one thing at a time," Teri said. The strategy has worked. Today Teri franchises the Grocery Game by zip code, so it's available in regions across the country. The Grocery Game has over 100,000 members.
