Chapter 25

Felix had fought off an excessively trembling body for the two hours after he returned home with Young’s notebook. He felt like he had just committed a major felony, one that could lock him up for years. He could only hope the past didn’t have that sort of appetite for justice.

During the first hour in the safety of his apartment, Felix had put the notebook on the kitchen table and sat there staring at it. He never opened it or touched it, treating it like a lethal bug that could end his life with one drop of venom.

He didn’t understand the past on the complex level that Arielle did, so he wasn’t sure what to expect as far as a time range for something to happen. Would someone come knocking on his door, accusing him of being inside an apartment that wasn’t his? Or perhaps nothing would happen until Young returned home and discovered his notebook missing.

Felix took a gamble and believed Young wouldn’t seek the notebook over the next two and a half days. By now he had over ten days of live and recorded footage of Young in his apartment, and he hadn’t once seen him open those closet doors. In fact, he pulled up a recording from last week, curious to see if the handcuffs had always been clasped around the closet’s door handles. Sure enough, they were, and he beat himself up for missing such a detail. Felix prided himself on his keen observation skills, and this felt like a blunder that should have never happened.

He didn’t dwell on it for too long. The handcuffs would have become obvious had Young actually used the closet. Instead, they blended into the backdrop, no different from the black-and-white poster of Marilyn Monroe hanging in the living room.

After that first hour had passed, Felix worked up the courage to open the notebook and resume reading. By five-thirty in the evening, the notebook was stuffed with different colored sticky notes on what seemed like every page. He had paced circles around their living room, and continued doing just that while he waited for Selena and Arielle to arrive.

At 5:50, Arielle finally stepped through the door. She looked to the kitchen, saw nothing cooking, then to Felix, who had beads of sweat forming on his forehead, and finally down to the notebook clutched in his grip.

“Is everything okay?” she asked. “Where’s Selena?”

Felix shrugged. As much as he had been watching the clock, it hadn’t occurred to him that Selena should have been home already. His stomach dropped to his knees as he couldn’t help wonder if his stealing of the notebook had led to something bad happening to Selena. He wanted to spew out hundreds of words at a time, but didn’t know where to start.

“Felix?” Arielle said, dropping her backpack by the door and crossing into the living room. “You don’t look too well. What happened today?”

Felix nodded, a lump suddenly forming in his throat. He had no idea why he had become so nervous to speak to Arielle about his findings.
