FIVE—PHOEBE

My heart is full of joy, and it’s unimaginable how relaxed I feel. Even though I’m just lying on the rug in a chilly museum gallery, as long as I’m in Warren’s arms, none of that matters. He’s made me feel so desirable—after all those years of feeling as if I could not be loved the way I am. He doesn’t seem to mind that I’m not as skinny as those mannequins downtown. He takes hold of my waist, my whole body, with his strong arms—and finds the places deep inside that bring me more pleasure than I ever imagined were possible.

“It’s a perfect night for observing the stars,” I say. “Too bad we don’t have some blankets to snuggle under.”

“Maybe we should get dressed. I’ll stay with you while you finish your work,” Warren offers. “Then we can head over to my place for a glass of wine, and maybe a bit more fun.”

“That’s a wonderful idea,” I answer, and we put our warm clothes back on, only I don’t put my heels on again, deciding to walk around the gallery barefoot instead. I don’t really want to be tripping any more.

I get back to work, and Warren relaxes at a museum bench along the wall. He takes a book out of his tool bag to occupy himself. While I’m trying to concentrate on what I see through the telescope, I realize Warren’s presence is just too distracting. His body is so big on that little bench, I want to go sit on his lap and do a fun dance for him.

“This is useless,” I finally concede. “We should just go on over to your place.”

“Are you sure?” Warren asks. He’s smiling a big smile like he’s ready to go whenever I am.

But then he sets his book down on the bench and I see the title on the cover—Hauntings in October: Ghosts in the Night.

“Don’t even tell me you’re reading a book of ghost stories!” I exclaim. “I know you’re superstitious, but you don’t really believe that stuff, do you?”

“Phoebe, I’ve been studying this book as part of my work to build the ghost exhibits. It’s about the Haunted Mansion right here in town. And there’s one story in particular that I thought I should tell you about, ‘The Tale of the Halloween Bride.’”

I feel the blood drain from my face, and I go cold when he says that. Too late, I realize my reaction has given away how this title strikes a chord within me. But I say with not a little fascination, “That’s the title of the exhibit we were standing in front of before coming in here, right?”

“Yes, it is. And I think this story explains what happened to you the other day when you stumbled into the antique shop saying you kept seeing a woman in an old-fashioned wedding gown. You haven’t seen her again, have you?” Warren walks toward me as he asks this, and holds out the book, opened to the pages of the story.
