Once you have selected a designer, make an appointment to speak with him or her on the phone. It is important to get a feel for how your relationship will work and if you feel comfortable asking questions. You also want someone who is confident and experienced enough to be honest about the viability of your cover ideas. If the designer believes your cover vision will not provide the most effective marketing, he or she should be able to explain the reasons the cover won’t work and offer alternatives. You do not want a designer who will implement your cover vision knowing that it will be ineffective.
Here are some questions to consider asking the designer during your telephone, email, or in-person interview.
How many covers have you designed in my genre?
What do you believe must be included on my cover to meet genre expectations?
What is your typical timeline for a design project? Are there additional fees if I need it sooner than that?
What is your preferred communication? Phone, email, text message?
How many mock-ups do you provide?
How many changes are allowed with the standard pricing?
Do you pay for the stock photos or do I?
What type of information do I need to provide about my book and what I see as the cover?
Is there a discount for multiple books, such as a series? If so, do the books need to be contracted within a specific period of time to obtain the discount?
If we disagree about what to include on the cover, what will be the result?
If I cannot accept the final design, is there still a cost I’m obligated to pay?
Assuming we both love the cover, will you be including my cover in your portfolio?
