Paradoxically, the impression one gets is that this apparent mental and emotional instability is what makes them strong in will and action. I am thinking of figures like the Baron of Arizona, Zack in The Steel Helmet, O’Meara in Run of the Arrow, Tolly Devlin in Underworld USA, and even Merrill in Merrill’s Marauders. All live impossible situations, and knowing they cannot win, they nevertheless act with a kind of conviction, a kind of instinctive immediacy—as if they were engaged in an incessant flight forward, and were committing themselves to a course of action in whose perverseness they almost seem to rejoice, because they intuitively accept it as the fundamental condition of their existence.
