By then Paukenschlag had ended, Bleichrodt’s U109 sinking its final ship on 6 February with artillery, the Panamanian SS Halcyon going down at 0300hrs. Bleichrodt had attempted to hit the ship with his last two torpedoes, but both had missed, running under the target and failing to explode. He was inclined to let the target go, fearing that it was a Q-ship, but his IWO persisted in requests to attack the ship with gunfire. Bleichrodt’s violent reaction betrayed signs of the neurosis beginning to affect the veteran commander.
